The six day indefinite strike by about 14,000 employees of Neyveli Lignite Corporation demanding wage revision, among other things, has ended.
The workers called off their strike on Monday midnight and reported for duty for the first shift on Tuesday morning. This followed a tripartite meeting at the company’s headquarters in Chennai between the Labour Commissioner, Mr Jaganatha Rao, the NLC Chief General Manager, Mr Lourdhas and the DMK and PMK trade union leaders.
Mr Lourdhas told PTI that “As per the agreement, wage revision is calculated from September 1st 2009, as also service weightage and other allowances. Arrears will be given from June 1 of that year.”
The NLC sources said the strike has resulted in a production loss of about INR 40 crore. An agreement has been reached over the percentage of increase in wages and allowances, with the management saying it would pay 25% fitment benefit of basic pay from January 1st 2007, a 3% additional increment and 3% additional weightage from September 1st 2009 and 40% common allowance from January 1st 2010.
The trade unions have been demanding payment of an additional increment since January 1st 2007.
