The week long martyrs week called by the Maoists that is ending recently has hit hard iron ore transportation by NMDC Limited
Company sources said that the public sector miner excavates iron ore in Bacheli and Kirandul areas that form Bailadila hills in India’s worst insurgency hit district Dantewada in Chhattisgarh state some 420 kilometers south of state capital Raipur.
A senior NMDC official based in Chhattisgarh said that transportation has been down up to 35% on a daily basis since July 28 affecting normal supply of about 60,000 tonnes per day because railways have cancelled rakes during night fearing attacks by Maoists.
The source said that the transportation is expected to resume to its full capacity from August 4 as the week long martyrs’ week that began on 28 July will end tonight. Production has not been hit at all.
Maoists claim they are fighting for the rights of poor peasants and landless laborers. They often call strikes in their strongholds in mineral rich Chhattisgarh.
