NMDC to bid for rock phosphate mine in Tunisia

Mr Rana Som chairman of NMDC announced Indian participation in the bid for the rock phosphate mine in Tunisia.

As per report “As part of a consortium led by Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, NMDC is sending a team to Tunisia for inspecting a rock phosphate mine.”

Tunisia is the World’s fifth largest and Africa’s second largest phosphate producer after Morocco, producing just over 8 million tonnes per year. The phosphate deposits of Tunisia are all sediments, found in Metlaoui Formation in the southern part of the Tunis basin the anticlinal deposits of the Gafsa region and the perched synclinal deposits of the Tebessa Thala region.

Production is controlled and operated by “La Compagnie des Phosphates de Gafsa” which has 9 operating open cast and underground operations in the Gafsa region. More than 90% of the phosphate rocks are currently mined from Gafsa.
