Blue Gem Coal is an extremely high grade of coal that is only found on the Tennessee Kentucky border. It is characterized by its low ash and sulphur contents as well as its hardness. Because of its purity, Blue Gem is one of the most sought after grades of coal in the world and is exported to many different countries.
The Meadow Creek mine is located in Whitley County, KY and is part of the Eastern Mountain Coal Field which is part of the Appalachia bituminous coal field, covering most parts of 30 counties in Kentucky and the adjoining areas in Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee. It covers an area from the Allegheny Mountains in the east across the Cumberland Plateau and the Pottsville Escarpment in the west. The region is known for its coal mining since the 1840's.
New Century Coal Inc, founded in 2006, is a junior mining company headquartered in Johnson City, TN. Their area of concentration is in the Appalachian Basin. The company's primary focus is expanding its coal mining operations at its properties in Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee through prospecting, leasing and mine production. New Century's coal is exported to countries as far as Korea, Poland and China for sale.
