Three rail cars carrying coal derailed Tuesday at the Omaha Public Power District's coal plant in north Omaha,
Spokesman Jeff Hanson confirmed that the derailment occurred at 10:40 AM when the rails gave way because the ground there has been saturated by flooding. He added that the derailment will not jeopardize continued operation of the coal plant.
Mr Hanson said that "We have sufficient coal on hand.” He added that “OPPD contractors are repairing the rails with the goal of completing the work by this weekend.”
The coal plant is one of OPPD's year-round, 24/7 plants. Another, Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station, has been idled due to flooding.
