It is reported that OneSteel is looking at doubling its iron ore exports from Whyalla.
As per report, a feasibility study into increasing hematite exports from 4 million tonnes to 8 million tonnes a year is under way.
Mr Steve Ashe GM investor relations & external affairs at OneSteel said that "Additionally, a program has commenced with the aim of increasing reserves.''
OneSteel aims to sell about 40 million tonnes of hematite from its mines in the Middleback Ranges over 10 years, starting from last year. The extra tonnage could be a financial boon for OneSteel, following recent rises of 79.8% and 96.5% for two types of ore secured by BHP Billiton in July 2008.
Under Project Magnet, which was completed last year, OneSteel converted its Whyalla blast furnace to magnetite feed, freeing up the more lucrative hematite ore for export. It loads the hematite on to barges, which ferry it about 8 kilometers into Spencer Gulf to a trans shipment barge, which then loads it on to ships for export.
