The Whyalla council said that the proposed deep sea port at Point Lowly, near Whyalla, will no longer be needed if a plan by OneSteel to expand its port facilitates goes ahead.
The steelworks is investigating the development of its facility so it can cater for the import and export requirements of the mining sector the same purpose as a Flinders Ports proposal to build a port at Point Lowly.
Mr Eddie Hughes councilor of Whyalla said that it makes more sense to have a facility at OneSteel. He added that "You've already got rail servicing that site, you've already got the makings of a port and it can be seriously physically expanded."
He said that "So it makes a lot more sense than building a port from scratch at an untouched site that contains a whole swag of incredibly important environmental values."
