It is reported that an iron ore mine is set to start operation near Whyalla in South Australia.

The SA Government has given OneSteel approval to start operations at its Iron Chieftain Mine about 40 kilometres west of Whyalla.

The USD 350 million venture will become SA's 13th operating mine when production starts before the end of the year.

Premier Mr Mike Rann said the project is expected to give greater job security for 650 people currently working for OneSteel.
