It is reported that Poland commemorated recently the 30th anniversary of a Communist era crackdown that left nine coal mine workers dead in the most brutal event of the country's emergency rule.
Mr Bronislaw Komorowski Polish President said Friday night at the Wujek coal mine in Katowice, southern Poland where the 1981 crackdown occurred that “We pay honor, remembering that their spilled blood and sacrifice prepared the road to Poland's freedom.”
Mr Komorowski met earlier with families of the victims followed by a mass led by the archbishop of Katowice.
Police and soldiers attacked the mine on December 16, three days after martial law was declared and shot at workers demanding the release of those imprisoned under the emergency ruling. They also called for the release of their chairman, Mr Jan Ludwiczak a member of the labour union Solidarity that had protested for democracy.
