LKAB announced that 2 pellet plants to be closed up to one year due to declined demand Sweden's state owned mining and resources company LKAB has extended the planned summer production stop in mines and palletizing plants, temporarily closing all iron ore production for eight weeks in summer and 2 palletizing plants for one year.
The reason is attributed to the persisting decline in demand for iron ore products.
The pellet plant MK3 at Malmberget and the plant at Svappavaara plant will be shut one year from mid August 2009 to mid 2010.
On March 2nd 2009 LKAB announced its decision to put into practice in July a 5 week suspension of iron ore production at Kiruna and Malmberget mines, and a 5 to 10 week stoppage of 5 pelletizing plants, while continuing operation of the Svappavaara pellet plant.
