The Economic Observer Newspaper reported that province would soon undergo a coal mine elimination campaign which would reduce the amount of coal mines from 522 to 120 by the end of this June.
Shaanxi was going to be one other province after Shanxi to have shaken up the coal industry. Industry sources indicated, this campaign aimed to help reserve energy and protect the environment more effectively. Yet no policies had come out carrying specific requirements of the elimination by the time of the news.
There had been tentative criteria for elimination locally though. Some cities and counties ruled that coal mines that endure the campaign shall be no lower than 1.2 million tonnes per year in capacity, and single-well capacity no lower than 300,000 tonnes per year and so on.
