Gas grid operator Enagas said that natural gas demand in major importer Spain rose by 11.6% in November from the same 2009 month, breaking a months long slump due mainly to cold weather.
Enagas added in a statement that demand in November was 37,653 gigawatt hours, or about 3.6 billion cubic metres. Domestic and industrial gas use rose by 18.1% YoY while gas burned by power generators was at a similar level. Year on year gas demand in Spain fell from June to October due to gas-fired plants giving way to renewable sources, coal or nuclear power.
Spain has to import more than 99% of the 40 bcm a year it consumes, mostly in the form of liquefied natural gas, of which it is the world's third largest importer.
