Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said that the Kuantan Municipal Council will set up a special body to govern and coordinate iron ore mining activities in Pahang. He said a guideline relating to iron ore mining was also needed to ensure the areas involved would be well-managed.
Adnan said lately, iron ore prospecting provided big returns to the state as there was high demand for the metal in the overseas market. He added that "For the first four months of the year, the state government received royalties amounting to MYR 5.5 million, as compared to MYR 4 million for the whole of last year.
He told reporters after chairing the state meeting that "As of today, 3,000 more applications have been received (to mine iron ore) and we ought to control this. Otherwise, the whole of Pahang will be dug out in search of iron ore.”
