It is reported that the State Government has shored up the future of brown coal in the Latrobe Valley and will spend an extra USD 5 million on plans to transition the Latrobe Valley to a low-carbon economy.
The State Government's will announce its Latrobe Valley industry and employment road map later this morning.
Mr Ryan also outlined the State Government's plans to export brown coal from the Latrobe Valley. He said that "The challenge is to be able to get it out of the ground, to dry it, in a manner which therefore reduces the emissions very considerably then we have a capacity to use it in different ways. There are plenty of options, for us in being able to transfer us into a true energy hub."
The roadmap is expected to include individual training subsidies for workers retrenched from the power industry.
