
According to the US Energy Information Administration, US coal production fell to about 19.93 million short tons during the week ended 8 September down by 1% from the prior week and the 3rd consecutive weekly decline.
Production from coal mines east of the Mississippi River fell about 200,000 tons to 7.97 million tons while output west of the river fell 170,000 tons to 11.15 million tons So far this year, US coal production at 702.4 million tons is down by 5.4%YoY.
Central Appalachian coal averaged USD 63.85 per ton during the week ended 14 September, unchanged from the previous 2 weeks but down 20% from around USD 80.20 a year earlier.
In NYMEX futures trading, Central Appalachian coal futures for October delivery settled at USD 53.95 per ton on 14 September down from USD 56.33 at the beginning of the week.
