MarketWatch reported that Brazilian miner Vale SA has declared force majeure on shipments from an Australian coal mine.
Vale said in a statement that “The Carborough Downs mine, part of Vale's operations in the Central Bowen Basin in Queensland, was shut down after high levels of carbon monoxide were detected.”
It said “The Queensland State Inspectorate for Mines subsequently ordered all employees be evacuated from the mine. No one was hurt.”
Vale said about 7,700 tonnes of production has been lost since May 29.
Vale said it is working with the regulator to restart operations as soon as possible.
In the first quarter of the year, Carborough Downs produced 325,000 tons of coal..
