The Mayor of Whyalla said that the area is set to become the hub of mining services in South Australia with the construction of the city's Industrial Park beginning this month.

Mr Jim Pollock said that 75% of the park's 34 allotments have been secured, with companies looking to locate to the park because if its proximity to mine sites and access to road and rail transport.

Mr Pollock said that although Whyalla is well positioned to reap the benefits of BHP Billiton's Olympic Dam mine expansion, it will not happen at any cost.

He said that "We're also very mindful of the environment and we would like to think that the developers if you like will put environmental issues first hand.”

He added that "So I think there's a real balance here that we can have with economy and AAA bottom line."
