ILLAWARRA Coal’s management of its mining operations beneath the Hume Highway was recognised at the Premier’s Public Sector Awards recently.
The company’s work with the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS, formerly the RTA) to manage mining beneath the Hume Highway, took out the infrastructure category at the awards.
Illawarra Coal worked closely with the RMS to design and implement a research, mitigation and management program to ensure the Appin mining had no adverse impact on the road.
Illawarra Coal head of external affairs Mr John Brannon said receiving the Premier’s Award was recognition of the company’s strong track record in successfully mining under key pieces of infrastructure. He added that “Our Appin mine operations beneath the Hume Highway are the result of extensive preparations and mitigation works over a number of years between Illawarra Coal and the RTA.”
He said the mitigation activities allowed the extraction of high quality steel.
