Market Report on Manganese Alloys
High carbon ferro manganese and silico manganese are infact the highest consumed ferro alloy for steel making. It is the principal deoxidizing agent in steel making and an important alloying element used for the production of ordinary mild steel. Ferro manganese is also used for production of sophisticated low and high alloy steel. These ferro alloys have also the property of controlling the effect of sulphur, which when manganese is present, forms manganese sulphide and tends to float out of the liquid steel.
Manganese has the effect of stabilizing austenite. Steel with 12–14 percent mn is fully austenitic and is used on a large scale for its wear and abrasion resisting characteristics. Bulk of the alloys these days are produced in submerged arc furnaces, especially in those countries which have considerable manganese ore resources, such as India, South Africa and lately, Australia. The manufacturing process is quite flexible and slag of ferro manganese can be reprocessed to silico manganese.
