Portland Business Journal reported that Evraz Inc said that it will temporarily lay off 225 workers at its Portland spiral pipe and steel mill.
The Russian steel giant, which acquired Oregon Steel Mills Inc in 2007, indicated in a letter to the city that the layoffs will happen over a 14 day period starting around May 25. It will affect workers at its 14400 N Rivergate Blvd facility.
The company notified the city Monday in compliance with the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, which requires that employers give 60 days advance notice ahead of a plant closing or mass layoff.
In a letter to the city, Raymond D Miller, Evraz Inc.’s director of safety, health and employment, attributed the layoffs to “a slowdown in business.”
While Miller said the layoff is “expected to be temporary,” his letter gave no indication of how long it would last.
