CTV Regina reported that Evraz has said that at least 250 employees will be laid off in the next two weeks at the steel giant's Regina facility.
Company spokeswoman Ms Kelly Brossart said that there is a possibility of further layoffs in the future as demand for large diameter steel pipe wanes in the cyclical industry.
Ms Brossart says Evraz began issuing layoff notices to employees in late September and started cutting jobs on October 20.
She said that the layoffs are not linked to the current economic turmoil in Europe.
Evraz has stated that they hope the layoffs are temporary, but can't commit to anything until they get more orders or ramp up production.
