Bloomberg reported that Prime Minister Mr Vladimir Putin energy chief, Mr Igor Sechin blamed local managers and faulty equipment for the accident that killed 75 people at Russia largest hydropower plant last month.
Mr Sechin said “There is something wrong with corporate ethics here. RusHydro needs to address this issue and probably certify its personnel on ethics.”
He said that locking pins on one of the turbines in the complex’s generator hall failed on August 17th causing an explosion and flood that destroyed the complex.
The deputy premier said the private company founded by some managers of the plant had the maintenance contract for the turbines and are partly to blame, since they were serviced as recently as March.
The disaster at the Soviet-era dam on the Yenisei River gripped the nation for days, as state television showed rescue divers scouring the wreckage for survivors as the death toll ticked up. Power supplies to the region north of where China, Kazakhstan and Mongolia come together were cut, including to some of the country’s biggest industrial enterprises.
