Interfax cited Mr Vagif Aliyev head of SOCAR's investment division as saying that state Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) is interested in taking part in the development of fields in the Middle East.

He said when asked about this by an Interfax correspondent that "Negotiations on the discussion of this issue will be held on April 15. He declined to specify the countries and the fields in question.

Mr Aliyev added that SOCAR hopes to hold an operator position in this project.
