Australian Stainless Steel Development Association is holding a half day industry workshop providing a practical guide to welding stainless steel.

The workshop, titled 'Stainless Steel Welding: from basics to high productivity', will feature Mr Kurt Staub from Sandvik Steels, Mr Richard Matheson from ASSDA and Mr Graham Sussex, a corrosion expert, also from the ASSDA.

According to the organizers, while austenitic grades seem deceptively easy to weld, there are major differences in processing time and costs when the right process is done correctly the first time.

The seminar covers traditional austenitic grades and the ferritic and duplex grades. It will provide essential understandings of the welding process, its effects and the critical differences between welding carbon steel and stainless steels.

Topics include handling and processing stainless steels, selecting consumables, gases, joint designs and processes for welding, MIG, TIG, Subarc and MMAW welding, fumes and OHS, and post weld surface treatments to restore corrosion resistance.

Seminar participants the workshop proceedings on CD, an 'Australian Stainless Reference Manual', the 2006 edition of 'Preventing Coastal Corrosion', a copy of ASSDA's 'Stainless Steel Stock Guide', and relevant Nickel Institute and International Molybdenum Association publications.

The Melbourne session will be held at Jika International Hotel on September 7th 2009, while the Sydney workshop will be held on September 8th 2009 at Harold Park Paceway. The Broncos Leagues Club in Brisbane will host the workshop on 9 September 2009.
