BNamericas reported that Chile's state copper company Codelco has submitted an EIA for the construction of a USD 700 million wind farm.

Pending approval, the project would be constructed 5 kilometers east of Calama in region II and use 125 turbines for a combined capacity of 250MW. As currently planned, the wind farm would generate 767GWh per year with wind speeds of 7 meters per second. Two substations would link the project to Chile's northern SING grid. The power would supply Codelco's Norte division.

A Codelco spokesperson said that it is preparing an EIS for the project and will tender the plant's construction after the necessary permits are obtained.
