
It is reported that Outokumpu has unveiled plans to lay off more than 1,800 workers at its Finnish mine and steelworks in response to the fall in world demand for stainless steel.
As per report, it is not currently believed to be planning further changes at its operations in Sheffield, where 230 jobs have been lost through the closure of its Meadowhall plant and around 50 are being cut at its Shepcote Lane plant as shifts in the melting shop are reduced from 18 to 15.
Outokumpu said that about 1,500 employees are being laid off for periods of up to 2 weeks in every 3 months at its Tornio works. A further 330 at a mine and ferrochrome works and in one of the melting shops will be laid off next month until at least the autumn. It wants to shed 20 jobs at its stainless tubular products plants in Finland.
