Xstrata Nickel in Falconbridge put into place its own internal safety precautions to contain a fire in its electric furnace, according to the Greater Sudbury Fire Service's platoon chief.
Tony Thibeault said firefighters responded to the call at about 9:02 AM and were on scene for about half an hour. The fire is being investigated by Xstrata, he said. No one was injured and all Xstrata employees have been accounted for.
Greater Sudbury Police Chief Frank Elsner tweeted about the fire at around 9:30 a.m. and said “there is no safety concern for the community.”
