The Specially Steel Industry of North America has released statistical data on imports, US consumption, and import penetration for YTD August 2011. The data represents US consumption, imports and import penetration for August 2011 as compared to the same 2010 eight month period.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
Stainless steel sheet/strip
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 286,176 tons, a 15.5% increase compared to YTD August 2010: U.S. consumption was 1.100.646 tons, a 34.8% increase: eight month import penetration was 26.0%, a 4.3 percentage point decrease from 2010.
Stainless steel plate
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 122.365 tons, a 126.9% increase compared to YTD August 2010: US consumption was 250.100 tons, a 62.4% increase: eight month import penetration was 48.9%, a 13.9 percentage point increase from 2010.
Stainless steel bar
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 97.638 tons, a 42.3% increase compared to YTD August 2010: US consumption was 179.536 tons, a 28.0% increase: eight month import penetration was 54.4%, a 5.5 percentage point increase from 2010.
Stainless steel rod
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 19,607 ton, a 22.0% increase compared to YTD August 2010: US consumption was 52,072 tons, a 23.5% increase: eight month import penetration was 37.7%, a 0.4 percentage point decrease from 2010.
Stainless steel wire
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 31,620 tons, a 10.6% increase compared to YTD August 2010; US consumption was 38.029 tons, a 1.2% increase; eight month import penetration was 83.1%, a 7.0 percentage point increase from 2010.
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD August 2011 were 557.407 tons, a 34.4% increase compared to YTD August 2010: US consumption was 1,620.382 tons, a 36.1% increase: eight month import penetration was 34.4%, a 0.5 percentage point decrease from 2010.
Alloy tool steel
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 73,432 tons, a 42.7% increase compared to YTD August 2010: US consumption and import penetration were not calculable.
Electrical steel
Imports in YTD August 2011 were 73,959 tons, a 21.4% increase compared to YTD August 2010: U.S. consumption was 140.503 tons, a 11.3% increase from YTD August 2010: eight month import penetration was 52.6%, a 4.3 percentage point increase from 2010.
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD August 2011 were 704.798 tons, a 33.7% increase compared to YTD August 2010; US consumption was 1,800,637 tons, a 33.6% increase: eight month import penetration was 39.1%, the same as 2010.
