
The Specialty Steel Industry of North America has released statistical data on imports, US consumption, and import penetration for YTD February 2011. The data represents US consumption, imports, and import penetration for February 2011 compared to the same 2010 two month period.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
Stainless steel sheet/strip:
Imports in YTD February 2011 were 67,802 tons, a 32.3% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 269,429 tons, a 34.2% increase; two month import penetration was 25.2%, a 0.3 percentage point decrease from 2010
Stainless steel plate: Imports in YTD February 2011 were 25,689 tons, a 151.2% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 55,470 tons, a 47.5% increase; two month import penetration was 46.3%, a 19.1 percentage point increase from 2010
Stainless steel bar: Imports in YTD February 2011 were 21,221 tons, a 78.1% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 42,242 tons, a 53.1% increase; two month import penetration was 50.2%, a 7.0 percentage point increase from 2010
Stainless steel rod: Imports in YTD February 2011 were 4,676 tons, a 24.3% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 12,791 tons, a 36.3% increase; two month import penetration was 36.6%, a 3.5 percentage point decrease from 2010
Stainless steel wire:
Imports in YTD February 2011 were 7,497 tons, a 12.2% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 9,293 tons, a 6.1% increase; two month import penetration was 80.7%, a 4.4 percentage point increase from 2010
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD February 2011 were 126,885 tons, a 51.4% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 389,225 tons, a 37.0% increase; two month import penetration was 32.6%, a 3.1 percentage point increase from 2010.
Alloy tool steel:
Imports in YTD February 2011 were 18,742 tons, a 134.7% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption and import penetration were not calculable
Electrical steel:
Imports in YTD February 2011 were 20,578 tons, a 40.2% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 33,019 tons, a 3.0% increase from YTD February 2010; two month import penetration was 62.3%, a 16.5 percentage point increase from 2010
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD February 2011 were 166,205 tons, a 56.1% increase compared to YTD February 2010; US consumption was 434,712 tons, a 35.7% increase; two month import penetration was 38.2%, a 5.0 percentage point increase from 2010.
