
The Specialty Steel Industry of North America has released statistical data on imports, US consumption and import penetration for YTD October 2011. The data represents US consumption, imports and import penetration for October 2011 compared to the same 2010 ten month period.
The following data is presented by specialty steel product line, total stainless steel, and total specialty steel:
Stainless steel sheet/strip:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 344.606 tons, a 10.4% increase compared to YTD October 2010; US consumption was 1,330,659 tons, a 29.2% increase; ten month import penetration was 25.9%, a 4.4 percentage point decrease from 2010
Stainless steel plate:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 138.967 tons, a 78.7% increase compared to YTD October 2010; US consumption was 294.540 tons, a 37.9% increase; ten month import penetration was 47.2%, a 10.8 percentage point increase from 2010
Stainless steel bar:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 119.300 tons, a 38.3% increase compared to YTD October 2010; US consumption was 218.564 tons, a 23.4% increase; ten month import penetration was 54.6%, a 5.9 percentage point increase from 2010
Stainless steel rod:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 22.837 tons, a 17.1% increase compared to YTD October 2010; US consumption was 60.632 tons, a 12.0% increase; ten month import penetration was 37.7%, a 1.7 percentage point increase from 2010
Stainless steel wire:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 38,872 tons, a 6.9% increase compared to YTD October 2010; US consumption was 50.979 tons, a 5.1% decrease; ten month import penetration was 76.3%, a 1.4 percentage point increase from 2010
Imports of total stainless steel (comprising the foregoing product lines) in YTD October 2011 were 664,583 tons, a 24.9% increase compared to YTD October 2010: US consumption was 1,955,373 tons, a 28.3% increase: ten month import penetration was 34.0%, a 0.9 percentage point decrease from 2010.
Alloy tool steel:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 91,146 tons, a 35.2% increase compared to YTD October 2010: US consumption and import penetration were not calculable
Electrical steel:
Imports in YTD October 2011 were 95.219 tons, a 21.5% increase compared to YTD October 2010: U.S. consumption was 191,533 tons, a 20.5% increase from YTD October 2010: ten month import penetration was 49.7%, a 0.4 percentage point increase from 2010
Imports of total specialty steel (comprising stainless steel, alloy tool steel and electrical steel) in YTD October 2011 were 850,948 tons, a 25.5% increase compared to YTD October 2010: US consumption was 2,195,031 tons, a 27.4% increase: ten month import penetration was 3%, a 0.5 percentage point decrease from 2010.
