TEX reported that review of supply and demand situation of ferrosilicon in Japan during the third quarter of 2011 shows that ferrosilicon consumption was down due to the lower crude steel production under the summertime power supply control, i.e. 18.06 million tonnes, down by 34% from the same period of 2010, and down by 31.5% from the preceding quarter (April to June) of 2011.
Consumption of ferrosilicon during the quarter was 99,527 tonnes, down by 6.0% from 105,894 tonnes in the same quarter of 2010, but a little up by 1.6% from the second quarter (April to June) of 2011 when imports were held off to some extent.
The imports, to which trend of consumption is usually reflected, of standard quality (Si>50%) ferrosilicon were 119,299 tonnes in the Q3, up 6.3% from 112,197 tonnes in the same period of 2010, and down by 4.9% from the preceding quarter. The drop in consumption in the Q3 will most probably affect, as a pressure over to, the imports of Q4 (October to December).
The January to September 2011 period aggregate of ferrosilicon consumption was 303,988 tonnes, down by 2.6% from 312,181 tonnes, down by 2.6% from 312,181 tonnes in the same period of 2010. Consumption has been actually in downtrend.
