The Canadian Press reported that a dispute over nickel bonuses has led to a grievance against Xstrata Nickel in Sudbury filed by Mine Mill Local 598/CAW.
The union claims that 800 of its production and maintenance workers are owed USD 7,000 each in nickel bonuses for the period of July to December 2010.
The union says its members are furious because they exceeded production targets set by the company.
However, a statement from a company official claims the nickel bonus was calculated exactly as agreed to and contained in the collective agreement.
Mr Peter Fuchs director of corporate affairs at Xstrata Nickel said that the nickel bonus is just one part of a total compensation package that now includes financial incentives related to the performance of the Sudbury operations which were paid out in 2010.
