It is reported that Vale Inco nickel processing plant got approved from Newfoundland and Labrador that they could dump effluent to a backwoods trout pond.

Vale Inco said that it is a major breakthrough for their USD 2 billion projects, which plan to dump more than 400,000 tonnes of tailings of copper, nickel, and cobalt per year. However, it also said that the project also needs support from the federal department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Meanwhile, the environmental protection group expressed disappointed about this decision and would try to decline the final approval from Ottawa. Since 2002, the federal Fisheries Act is changed. 15 mining companies have proposed to use water bodies as tailing ponds.
