Airbus pioneers the TRUTHS mission, a vital part of the European Space Agency's Earth Watch program. Focused on Earth observation, TRUTHS aims to set a gold standard for calibration, measuring solar radiation and Earth's reflected sunlight with unmatched precision. This venture, led by the UK, signifies a global effort to enhance climate understanding, provide accurate measurements, and strengthen Europe's position in Earth observation.



In a significant stride toward advancing Earth observation capabilities, Airbus has secured a pivotal role in the European Space Agency's (ESA) TRUTHS mission. Part of the Earth Watch program, this mission involves meticulous component definition, concentrating on payload development and de-risking activities.

The TRUTHS satellite, an acronym for Traceable Radiometry Underpinning Terrestrial and Helio Studies, aims to measure the Sun's radiation and Earth's reflected sunlight with unparalleled precision. This mission sets out to provide an accurate benchmark, elevating the standards for climatological datasets and calibrating observations from other satellites.

The contract awarded to Airbus is a crucial step in advancing the TRUTHS mission, focusing on payload development and de-risking activities. This 'standards laboratory in space' will play a pivotal role in elevating the accuracy of climate change forecasts by providing a consistent reference for satellite observations.

Jean Marc Nasr, Head of Space Systems at Airbus, emphasized the significance of TRUTHS, stating, "TRUTHS will provide the gold standard of calibration for space-based Earth observation – a kind of 'standards laboratory in space.'" The mission's ability to cross-reference measurements will empower scientists and climatologists, facilitating more accurate forecasts and quicker data analysis.

The UK, leading the TRUTHS mission, recognizes its global impact in understanding climate change. Andrew Griffith, UK Science, Research, and Innovation Minister, highlighted the mission's role in providing invaluable measurements, driving growth in the space sector, and advancing the UK's standing as a science and technology superpower.

ESA's Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, underscored the importance of reliable data in the face of global climate action commitments. TRUTHS will serve as a benchmark, enabling easier comparison of data from other satellites, contributing to improved data harmonization and reliability.

The TRUTHS satellite will feature a Cryogenic Solar Absolute Radiometer (CSAR) for primary calibration, benchmarking measurements with unprecedented accuracy. With the ability to estimate radiative imbalance underlying climate change, TRUTHS will significantly reduce the time required for such assessments. The mission will also play a crucial role in calibrating sensors on other satellites, contributing to the overall effectiveness of Earth observation initiatives.

TRUTHS is a collaborative effort funded by ESA member states, spearheaded by the UK and involving contributions from the Czech Republic, Greece, Romania, Spain, and Switzerland. Airbus, along with partners like Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, Teledyne e2v, and other key contributors, is set to propel the mission forward, fostering a new skill set for Earth observation in Europe's future.
