Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies, in collaboration with Breeze Airways, proudly announced the commencement of the airline's most extensive nonstop route, an Airbus A220 flight powered by GTF engines, covering over 2,250 nautical miles from Rhode Island's T.F. Green International Airport to Los Angeles International Airport. The festivities commenced with an unprecedented airline employee town hall event held at Pratt & Whitney's East Hartford, Conn. Customer Training Center, attended by Breeze founder and CEO, David Neeleman, and Breeze president, Tom Doxey.
Neeleman expressed his admiration for the GTF engine technology, stating, "GTF engine technology for the A220 has been pivotal to Breeze's growth and success over the past two years. It has allowed us to establish new city connections while simultaneously reducing operating costs and environmental impact."
The GTF engine serves as the exclusive powerplant for the Airbus A220 family, boasting a remarkable reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of up to 25% per seat, NOx emissions by up to 50%, and noise footprint by up to 75%.* Certified for operation with 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and successfully tested with 100% SAF, the GTF engines possess the potential for further reductions in carbon emissions, aiding the aviation industry in achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
Rick Deurloo, the president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, emphasized the transformative impact of GTF engines, stating, "GTF engines enable airlines like Breeze to operate long, thin, transcontinental routes with revolutionary aircraft such as the A220. The launch of service between Providence and Los Angeles represents a significant milestone in the airline's rapid expansion."
Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, Breeze Airways was established in 2018 and commenced flight operations in May 2021. The airline operates a fleet of 12 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, with the 13th delivery forthcoming, and has an additional 66 A220-300s on order. Breeze also incorporates Embraer E190 and E195 aircraft in its fleet, each equipped with Pratt & Whitney's APS2300 auxiliary power unit (APU).
Pratt & Whitney's GTF engine, in conjunction with Collins Aerospace nacelle and accessories, delivers unparalleled fuel efficiency and sustainability benefits for single-aisle aircraft. The revolutionary geared fan architecture of the engine sets the foundation for future sustainable aviation technologies. For more information, visit pwgtf.com.
