In a significant boost to environmental infrastructure in Kosovo, the Gjilan wastewater development project has secured additional funding from bilateral donors to the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). The €2.5 million grant agreement was signed today in Pristina, further advancing the project's construction of a wastewater treatment plant and the expansion of the existing wastewater and sewerage network in Gjilan municipality. The signing ceremony, attended by representatives from the European Union Office in Kosovo and the regional water company, Hidromorava, marks an important milestone in the collaboration between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and WBIF. The EBRD had previously provided a €10 million loan for the project in 2019, while the EIB is extending another €10 million loan. The wastewater treatment plant, once completed, will play a vital role in reducing pollution caused by untreated wastewater entering nearby rivers, thereby ensuring cleaner water for the residents of Gjilan. Beyond improving water quality and public health, the project also contributes to environmental preservation and climate change mitigation in Kosovo's water and wastewater sector.Over the years, the rivers in Kosovo have experienced a decline in water quality due to inadequate wastewater and solid-waste treatment systems. The EBRD's involvement in addressing these challenges and promoting investments in modern environmental infrastructure aims to alleviate these issues. Notably, this will be the second wastewater treatment plant supported by the EBRD and the EU in Kosovo, with the other plant currently under construction in South Mitrovica, Vushtrri, and the surrounding areas. The Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) plays a crucial role in supporting socio-economic development and EU accession efforts across the region. By providing financial assistance and technical expertise for strategic investments, the WBIF facilitates sustainable progress. This initiative, jointly established by the European Union, financial institutions, bilateral donors, and Western Balkan governments, aims to foster socio-economic growth and enhance regional integration. The EBRD's commitment to Kosovo is evident through its investments of €601 million since 2012. With a focus on promoting the green economy, supporting private sector development, and fostering regional integration, the EBRD's strategic priorities align with Kosovo's long-term sustainable development goals.
