David Chipperfield Architects announced that The refurbishment of the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, an icon of twentieth-century architecture, is now complete. In a digital ceremony on 29 April, the keys were handed over to the clients - Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Berlin State Museums) and Stiftung PreuBischer Kulturbesitz (Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation). Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Neue Nationalgalerie has been dedicated to the art of the twentieth century since its opening in 1968. After fifty years of ageing, intensive use and sporadic repairs, the building required complete refurbishment and modernisation. The existing fabric has been preserved and services upgraded with minimal visual compromise to the building's original appearance. The museum will re-open to the public in August 2021. Van der Rohe’s steel and glass structure was completed in 1968, and is his only European work built after his emigration to the US. The 13,900 sq m gallery has been in continuous use since then, so the upgrade aimed to restore its fabric and upgrade its systems while keeping the appearance as unchanged as possible. The air-conditioning, lighting, security, cloakroom, café, shop, disabled access and art handling were all modernised, the building’s reinforced concrete shell was repaired, and the stone cladding and all interior fittings were removed and modified where necessary.
