The exploitation of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposit in Algeria is expected to start in the near future in cooperation with China. As a result, Algerian companies, which are looking for diversification of raw materials sources due to interrupted supply chains and high prices, will get an opportunity to become more self-sufficient in the feedstock. Algeria’s minister of energy and mines Mohamed Arkab met a delegation from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, which is specialising in infrastructure projects. The parties agreed on some decisions aimed at accelerating the project of the Gara Djebilet iron depositUnder the first phase, the western part of the mine will be put into operation with some 1.7 billion tonnes of reserves, while the total reserves are estimated at 3.5 billion tonnes. Initially, the commercial production will take place at pilot plants with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes per year, while the full-scale potential may reach 40-50 million tonnes of raw materials. The possibility of starting the operation in 2022 has been studied. The mine is located approximately 140 km south-east of Tindouf, and Algeria intends to build railway lines linking the wilayas of Tindouf and Bechar to transport iron ore and its products using electric trucks and specially made trains
