More homeowners in Kosovo will be able to improve the energy efficiency of their households thanks to a new EUR 2 million credit line extended by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development to the Agency for Finance in Kosovo. AFK will offer financing for investments in energy efficiency measures such as insulation, energy-efficient windows, heat pumps and solar panels. After the successful implementation of these measures, borrowers will be eligible for cashback of up to 20 per cent of their total investment thanks to funding from the European Union. The loan to AFK is provided under the Green Economy Financing Facility (, a programme supporting energy-efficient ways to create a greener and more sustainable economy. In the Western Balkans alone, the programme has a volume of EUR 135 million. It is supported by the EU, the Western Balkans Investment Framework and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance, and is part of the Regional Energy Efficiency Programme (for the Western Balkans. To date, the GEFF in Kosovo has reached more than 960 households and provided loans of more than EUR7.7 million for individual projects, via partner financial institutions, that have contributed to savings exceeding 9,010 MWh of energy and a reduction of more than 3,100 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. The most frequently financed measures are windows and doors, insulation, biomass boilers and heat pumps. To date, around 7,900 households in the Western Balkans have improved their energy efficiency through the GEFF programme, with investments in projects that have contributed to a reduction of more than 11,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to taking 7,000 cars off the road.
