Colombian oil & gas giant Ecopetrol, in partnership with Accenture, Claro & Microsoft, has carried out the first 5G pilot test applied to online operational analysis for maintenance operations at the Barrancabermeja Refinery, with the use of secure devices for Remote Assistance in maintenance. The Hydrotreater plant, one of the most critical in the refinery, was able to carry out operational maintenance in record time with safe augmented reality devices. Before the use of this technology, a time between 3 to 8 days was estimated and the displacement of specialized personnel from other countries was required.During the development of the pilot, it was possible to provide access to information, images, and communication in real time, so that Remote Assistance could be provided from the United States and the plant personnel could be guided to identify alternatives and find the technical response to maintenance in a matter of hours.Ecopetrol, together with Accenture, Claro and Microsoft, continues to work on the development of an ecosystem of innovative technological solutions for monitoring, risk mitigation and real-time communication that allow the transformation and digitization of refinery processes.Science, technology and innovation are part of the transformation process carried out by Ecopetrol; Digital solutions supported by Claro's 5G technology and the experience of Accenture and Microsoft make it possible to maximize time resources and reduce operating costs. Remote Assistance increased maintenance productivity and generated high cost efficiency because there was no need to mobilize specialized personnel from manufacturers, which generated savings of more than USD 1 million.
