Immediately after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Gasunie entered into talks with the Dutch Minister of Energy and Climate Policy Rob Jetten. The port of Eemshaven emerged as the most suitable location for this. Gasunie has started developing an LNG terminal at the port of Eemshaven in Groningen and is working hard on laying the infrastructure for two floating LNG facilities to The Netherlands less dependent on Russian gas by imports of liquefied natural gas. Gasunie has now signed two separate contracts for the charter of a floating storage and regasification unit, one with the American energy infrastructure company New Fortress Energy and one with the Belgian shipping company Exmar. Both FSRUs will arrive in Eemshaven in mid-August.The Netherlands and the EU want to phase out their dependence on Russian natural gas over the coming years. Netherlands uses about 40 billion cubic meters of natural gas every year & about 15% of that comes from Russia. If the supply of this gas suddenly stops, Netherlands may have a problem next winter. With an annual capacity of 8 billion cubic meters, the EemsEnergy Terminal can fill that gap with gas to spare.Gasunie does not trade in natural gas itself, but provides the infrastructure.
