Southern California Gas Co has begun the planning and development process for a hydrogen pipeline system that would be capable of delivering green hydrogen equivalent to 25% of the company’s current natural gas capacity. Called the Angeles Link, the project would deliver hydrogen from electrolyzers powered by 100% clean energy to end users, primarily electrical generation, heavy transportation and heavy industry, in the Los Angeles basinBenefits of Angeles LinkGreen hydrogen is produced entirely from renewable electricity, and it expands our renewable energy storage capabilities, allowing us to utilize more renewable electricity and avoid curtailment while reducing emissions in hard-to-electrify sectors.Angeles Link can: Displace up to 3 million gallons of diesel fuel per day by replacing diesel powered heavy-duty trucks with hydrogen fuel cell trucks. Eliminate up to nearly 25,000 tons of smog forming NOx per year and 14.3 million metrics tons of CO2 from the air annually – the equivalent of taking 3.1 million cars off the road. Convert up to four natural gas power plants to green hydrogen.SoCalGas intends to fully decarbonize its operations by 2045, and the Angeles Link will accelerate progress toward this goal, Navin said. Demand from potential users, as well as state and federal policy, also factored into the company’s decision to construct an all-hydrogen pipeline
