New Line to Interconnect Tram Network of Moscow

According to the Moscow Department of Transport, for the first time in 40 years, a new tram line will be built in Moscow - it will run along Akademika Sakharova Avenue. The launch is scheduled for the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024. The 1.6 km section will connect the tram lines at Komsomolskaya metro station to the ones near the Chistye Prudy metro station, thus creating additional "tram diameters" throughout the city. One of the diameters will connect the east and the south of Moscow, the second will connect the east and the southwest of the city. Travelling around the capital will become more convenient for almost two million people.

It was also noted that thanks to the new tram line, passengers will be able to get from the Komsomolskaya Square to the Boulevard Ring two times faster without using the metro. Komsomolskaya station itself will be unloaded by 50 thousand people a day.

In addition, in 2023 Moscow will complete the construction of the Three Station Square (Ploschad Tryokh Vokzalov) hub, which will be used by the MCD-2 and MCD-4 lines of the Moscow Central Diameters (MCD, on-surface commuter railway lines). After the opening of the tram line, the passengers of the MCD will be able to interchange to the tram routes.

According to the decision of the Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, for the first time in 40 years a new tram line will be built in Moscow it will run along Akademika Sakharova Avenue. Detailed modelling of the section showed that there will be no problems for drivers as the roadway is wide enough and has enough capacity, and the operation of traffic lights at the intersection with the Garden Ring will not be changed, - said Maksim Liksutov, the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport.

Moscow continues to work on improving trams network. In 2021, the Moscow Metro has started to operate the tram infrastructure. The single management and applying strict metro standards aim at increasing speed, enhancing maintenance, and improving passenger’s experience of the Moscow tram.

Moscow also constantly renews trams rolling stock. Now modern low-floor models of trams operate on 87% of the routes. In 2023, modern fully low-floor one- and three-section cars will make up the absolute majority of trams in the city.

Earlier the Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport Maksim Liksutov announced the launch of a driverless tram in Moscow by 2022-2023. The Moscow Department of Transport together with Yandex company realizes the given project. Now the Krasnopresnensky tram depot is preparing the equipment for the launch of a driverless tram.
