Italian contractor Webuild, formerly known as Salini Impregilo, has won two transport contracts worth EUR 2.3 billion as part of two joint ventures. One is a EUR 1.1 billion rail line that will run 23km from the southern end of the Brenner Base Tunnel between Fortezza and Ponte Gardena in northern Italy. The project, developed by state-owned Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, aims to increase the capacity of the Verona–Fortezza section of the Munich–Verona line by 400%, and to increase the speed and performance on the route by adding underground interconnections. Webuild owns 51% of this project, with Swiss construction firm Implenia holding the rest.
Also in northern Italy, a consortium led by Webuild and its Astaldi subsidiary has won a EUR 1.3 billion contract to add 33km to the Pedemontana–Lombarda highway. Webuild owns 70% of this project with contractor Pizzarotti holding the remainder. Construction on the B2 highway section includes building 13km of road linking Lentate sul Seveso and Cesano Maderno; work on the C project involves a 20km connection between Cesano Maderno and Milan’s A51 eastern beltway. This scheme is due to be completed before the 2026 Winter Olympics which will be held in Cortina and Milan.
