After a period of intensive study and various consultations with stakeholders, the design alternative for the Nieuwe Sluis Zeebrugge has been determined. It is now clear where exactly the new lock and the new connecting road Nx will be planned. The project links major infrastructure works to liveability measures, which should become a lever to upgrade the entire environment. The new lock will be located south of the Visart site and will provide a second access to the inner harbour. In order to separate port traffic and through traffic from local traffic, a new connecting road Nx will be built (the new N-road to be constructed has yet to be given a number, hence Nx for the time being). The new road will partly be tunnelled under: this tunnel runs south of the Stationswijk to the recycling park and further follows the route of the Isabellalaan. On top comes a green roadside landscape. The new lock will have a major impact on the environment. That is why quality of life measures and an extensive less nuisance plan are an integral part of the project. Not only to limit nuisance during the construction phase, but also to upgrade the entire project environment after the lock has been taken into use.In recent years, more than 20 possible combinations for the complex project Nieuwe Sluis Zeebrugge have been put under the magnifying glass. Each of these puzzle pieces was tested against a whole series of criteria: nautical accessibility, technical feasibility, environmental impact, mobility impact, quality of life, etc. The residents and companies in Zeebrugge were also able to give their ideas about this during discussions, information moments and participation sessions. The design alternative will be worked out in more detail in the near future. In addition, the approach for the construction phase is also being prepared. The aim is to arrive at the draft project decision by 2024. This document describes how the works will be carried out. The draft project decision is placed under public scrutiny, so it is possible to participate in it. The final project decision will be adopted after the consultation responses have been discussed.
