Leading global aluminium producer Russian RUSAL has received the Vernadsky National Environmental Award in the category Innovative eco efficient technologies in industry and energy. In a bid to achieve this award, a joint team, of specialists from RUSAL’s scientific divisions; the SibVAMI Irkutsk, RUSAL ITC Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk BrAZ, Novokuznetsk NkAZ and Irkutsk IrkAZ aluminium smelters, presented the company’s latest technological development, a dry gas cleaning system for waste gases in aluminum production. The new technology allows the Company to capture over 99.5 % of hydrogen fluoride and solid fluoride gases and provides significant savings in capital costs.
The project to retrofit RUSAL's smelters with its own DGCS has been implemented since 2017. Engineering solutions within the framework of this technology are patented. Eight DGCS developed and manufactured by RUSAL are already in operation at the Bratsk BrAZ, Novokuznetsk NkAZ and Irkutsk IrkAZ aluminium smelters. More than 20 modern gas cleaning systems will have been installed at the Company’s sites by 2025. Overall, from 2017 to 2024, the amount of capital expenditure, allocated to the environmental retrofitting programme at the BrAZ, NkAZ and IrkAZ, including DGCS’ installation and the transition to Eco-Soderberg technology, totals more than 18 billion rubles.
