Shawinigan Aluminum Inc is investing CAD 10 million to build a new aluminium recycling center that will recycle 30,000 tonnes of aluminium per year. The additional recycling capacity is complementary to the billet supply which amounts to 60,000 tonnes per year. Recycled products will therefore account for up to 50% of the total supply of billets. With the new recycling center at SAI, more than 50,000 metric tonnes of aluminium per year of recycling capacity are located in Quebec within the Groupe Sotrem-Maltech.

In addition to new furnaces, this project involves adding a 17,500 square foot building. The new facilities, less energy-intensive than conventional ovens, will have an annual melting capacity of 30,000 tonnes and will save over 1.6 million cubic metres of natural gas every year, or the equivalent of over 3100 tonnes of CO2 per year. They will also help Shawinigan Aluminium increase its long-term production.

SAI is now able to use clean process aluminium scrap and transform it into billets while maintaining quality, meeting the growing needs of customers for recycled products and sustainable solutions, and accredits its new remelting area. In addition, the project will provide SAI with additional operational flexibility, permitting it to expand its product range.

The governments of Quebec and Canada are granting a total of CAD 4.99 million in financial assistance to Shawinigan Aluminium to support a CAD 10‑million project to establish a new centre for melting down scrap aluminum. In all, 13 jobs will be created in the Mauricie region.
