16 Miners Dead in Bus Accident at MMG’s Las Bambas in Peru
MMG reported that on August 27 at approximately 1:03 PM local time a vehicle transporting 18 contractors from Cusco to the Las Bambas mine left the road in the Huallpachaca area in Cotabambas province in Apurímac Region causing the death of 16 passengers and leaving 2 injured. Las Bambas is assisting search, rescue, police and medical treatment from Cusco and is offering direct support to the family members of those involved in the accident. Las Bambas is cooperating closely with local authorities in the investigation of the cause of the accident.
The passengers were employees of contracting firms including: Manpower; Geotec; MB Renting; AKD Drilling; Lavalin; M&RC; JRM and JP Natlian.
The sprawling Las Bambas mine, one of Peru's largest, lies between the province of Cotabambas and a neighboring one. Peru is the world's second copper producer.
