ABP's Port of Hull celebrates the inaugural arrival of Vertom Joy, a modern cargo carrier equipped with eco-friendly diesel-electric propulsion and a battery bank. Operated by Vertraco Shipping on the Europe Caribbean Line, this vessel, managed by Global Shipping, brings enhanced connectivity to Humber's global network, serving a vital role in trade between the UK, Caribbean, Guyana, Surinam, and Venezuela.


The Port of Hull, under the umbrella of Associated British Ports (ABP), recently witnessed the maiden entry of Vertom Joy into its King George Dock. A novel addition to the cargo carrier segment, Vertom Joy, completed in early 2023, showcases an advanced diesel-electric propulsion system with an integrated battery bank, emphasizing its environmental consciousness. This vessel operates within the Europe Caribbean Line (ECL) monthly service, overseen by Vertraco Shipping and handled by Global Shipping.

Simon Bird, ABP's Regional Director for the Humber region, expressed delight in welcoming Vertom Joy on its inaugural voyage. He highlighted the significance of this arrival, emphasizing the port's global connectivity within the Humber ports, renowned for facilitating international imports and exports.

Peter Waud, Managing Director of Global Shipping Services, lauded Vertom Joy's arrival, citing it as a significant enhancement to the existing fleet calling at Hull. He anticipates a fruitful partnership and numerous successful voyages ahead.

Benny Kerkhoff remarked on Vertom Joy's potential in advancing services for the oil and gas industry in Guyana and Surinam, marking a crucial progression in the vessel's strategic role.

Featuring distinctive and colorful ECL cranes capable of lifting a combined weight of 150 metric tons, Vertom Joy spans 128.86 meters in length. With 80 meters of unboxed cargo space and a cargo hold of 512,000 cubic feet, this modern multipurpose ship accommodates diverse cargoes, ranging from steel, iron ore, biomass, to bulk and project cargoes.

Operating on the liner service connecting Belgium, the UK, Guyana, Surinam, Trinidad & Tobago, and Venezuela, Vertom Joy signifies a significant step in bolstering trade ties and fostering connectivity across these regions.
