Hydro’s recycling plant in Clervaux in Luxembourg recently produced 130 tonnes of near-zero carbon aluminium Hydro CIRCAL 100R with 100 % post-consumer aluminium scrap. This is the first 130 tonnes of Hydro CIRCAL 100R, with work now ongoing to optimize the production. The challenge when using high levels of post-consumer scrap is to meet the limits for chemical composition for the alloy only by using scrap without the possibility to dilute a melt with pure primary ingot.This production milestone is a significant improvement, compared with the current 2.3 kg CO2/kg aluminium in Hydro CIRCAL extrusion ingot with 75% post-consumer aluminium scrap. Hydro CIRCAL is a certified alloy with post-consumer recycled aluminium. The composition of CIRCAL is verified by DNV GL, based on traceability and quality principles developed by Hydro.
